Here Are Some AMGs And Corvettes Hanging Out Together

I could sense some rivalry between these Mercedes and Corvette owners. There was palpable tension in the air. The Corvette owners lined up together on one side and the Mercedes owners on the other. And they didn't really talk to each other much - maybe only a handful of them interacted.

You could say it was like oil and water.

You might be wondering what brought all these Mercedes and Corvette owners together in the first place: this seems like an unlikely occurrence.

This was an event organized primarily for Mercedes AMG owners but it turns out that the mastermind behind this event appreciates both AMGs and Vettes (and has some close friends who own Vettes). Besides Mercedes and Corvettes, there were also a few people who showed up in cars like the M3, M5 and 350Z but it was mostly supposed to be an AMG thing.

Although, I think there were more Corvettes than AMGs!

After looking at the pictures above, someone made a comment - "Hey, why are the AMG owners parked all crazy and spread out but the Corvettes have a nice formation?"

The reply?

"The AMG owners care about getting their doors dinged."

I suppose there is always some sort of rivalry between owners of the specific kind of car they might own - say Porsches or Audis or Corollas.

You know that those Corolla owners are a highly passionate bunch - admiring the fuel efficiency of their cars and such.

However, I consider myself to be brand-agnostic. Most cars offer something unique in terms of driving experience and so I have found that I can generally appreciate most kinds of cars. I think there is something of value that's offered in most cases so I don't discriminate.

Out of all the AMGs that were there, the SL65 AMG Black Series was the one that stood out the most. With the huge flared out wheel wells and the wide stance of the car, this was one mean-looking AMG.

Aside from the SLS AMGs, this Black Series drew the most attention.

The people who showed up got a tour of the facility and checked out various things around the track. I missed it because it was way too early on a Saturday morning while I was still in bed dreaming about owning a 997 911 turbo.

So what was I doing at an AMG meetup?

Good question. There are two reasons. First, I'm always looking for an excuse to head over to the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) and second, as part of the event we would actually get to go out on the track for a couple of laps of "spirited" driving.

Here is a video of our laps on the track.

As we lined up to enter the track, you can again see the clear demarcation between the Mercedes and Corvettes.

AMGs to the right and Corvettes to the left.

Come on folks - mix it up!

Having never been on an F1 track before, I have to say that it was a pretty cool experience. The pavement was smoother than any road I've been on and once we were out on the track it seemed much bigger and wider than it looks from the stands or on TV during an F1 race.

We were being led by a person in an SLS and luckily he kept up a pace that made it a lot of fun to be out there. Of course, none of what we were doing was even close to "racing", but it was quick enough to where there were ample opportunities to take advantage of all 604 horses and 738 lb-ft of torque that the CL65 AMG had to offer. Being on the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but this was a whole different experience.

None of this cost us anything which made it even better! It's not every day you get a chance to drive out here for free so needless to say, all of us had a great time.

Out at COTA, it is pretty easy to get carried away out there because you pick up so much speed on the straightaways that if you don't anticipate the turns you could easily end up braking too late and find yourself in trouble. COTA has had its fair share of victims during amateur track days on some of the trickier turns.

Participating in any car-related event like this is always a blast especially when it involves COTA in some capacity. I'm sure there will be more events here in the future - and as usual - I won't hesitate to be back.

Time for an oil change now that it's had a track day!

Looks like a ton of fun though. It's a good thing that people were open and civil and a few were even receptive. The shop were I take my cars is run by a member of the BMW CCA, and the track days they organize are open to everyone, BMW or otherwise. Not only that, but the guys who go are rarely the snobbish stereotype we all like to joke about on occasion, and that's such a great thing to experience, it's something everyone should really experience at least once.

The AMG and 'Vette guys really need to organize a lunch together sometime to break the ice, maybe spend some time looking at each other's cars and really appreciating them for what they are, not the financial ability to own them.

The only thing I don't think you talked enough about was how well the CL65 handled and performed on a track, otherwise, great read!

Too many fan boys just need to get over themselves. There's no reason to be an ass. I'm sure the organizer of the event was a little disappointed at the behavior exhibited.

Yeah, really!

Thanks for the compliment! Honestly the CL65 had a ton of body roll and wasn't great around turns and such but down the straightaways - lot of speed and power as you would expect.

I like the old Vettes but not the new ones. That Dr. Pepper 172 is cool. I have always liked that Vette race car with the little bubble lights replacing the flip ups. If I had to have a Vette I would have a split window or a clone of this.

Hah, in all honesty it wasn't too bad. Mostly just people keeping to themselves.
